About me:

Trevor Thompson BSc (Hons), MB Bch BAO (Hons) Dip Clin Ed, FRCSI, FRCS (Urol).

I am a fully registered medical practioner (GMC 3454169) holding undergraduate degrees in Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics (1990) and an intercalated degree in Anatomy (1987) from the Queens Univeristy of Belfast.

I undertook my house officer year in Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast, winning the house doctor of the year prize awarded by the consultant staff.

I worked for one year as an anatomy demonstrator in the Department of Antomy in Queens University of Belfast teaching medical students anatomy through cadaveric dissection.

I undertook surgical and then urological training through the Northern Ireland training rotations. I spent one year as chief resident in Urology at the University of California Davis Medical Center, Sacramento (2000). I completed my training with one year in Western General Hospital Edinbrough as Endourology fellow with Professor David Tolley (2003). I gained my FRCS (Urol) in 2003. I won the Keith Yeates medal for outstanding performance and top scores in this intercollegiate speciality examination.

I then entered consultant practice in Belfast City Hospital as a urological surgeon and complex endourologist. I helped provide core Urology, emergency Urology and stone surgery in Belfast and complex Endourology in Northern Ireland.

I developed an interest in surgical training. I was training programme director for core surgical training and the deputy head of school of surgery in the Northern Ireland Deanery (NIMDTA) between 2012 and 2018. I then became head of school of surgery and was in charge of all postgraduate surgical surgical training in Northern Ireland between 2018 and 2024.

In 2024 I partially reitred from frontline NHS Consultanmt work at 60 years of age.

I am no longer part of the emergency on-call rota. I continue, as before, to provide core Urology and Endourology services for my hospital. I act as a mentor to new consultants and I still teach medical students and junior Urologists in training.

I was appointed as an examiner in the FRCS (Urol) intercollegiate exit examination for Urological trainees in 2016. I will continue in this role until 2026.

I remain am active member of the Endourology society, Irish Society of Urology and the European Association of Urology.
